I recently bought an xj900 and the guy said it only needed a starter. I put one in from a spare xj650 turbo engine, and after some playing with the bike I got it started. After riding a few minutes it cut out on me and I pushed it back home. I noticed that cylinders 1&4 exhaust pipes were just warm to the touch while 3&2 were piping hot. So I know that I have a bad coil or wires, plugs (new) or igniter going bad. This isn´t the real issue now. Every time I try to start the bike the starter will turn for a few seconds and then I get this God-awful grinding noise. Each time I try its the same. I put a jump starter on the battery and so I know I´ve got more than enough juice. I re-pulled the starter and inspected the visible teeth inside the bike and on the starter unit. They are all in place. My question: Do I have an internal starter gear problem? I´ve heard of people breaking off one of these gears teeth and having start issues with their 900s. Any help would be great. |
