82 seca with hitachi carbs. starts fine and engine sounds ok but once its hot the idle goes lumpy and exhaust is smokey. if i leave it on tickover for 5 minutes it will cut out as the plugs are black and sooty. its not burning oil, the soot is dry and the smoke from the exhaust is full of fumes from fuel.

our thoughts were the float heights thinking they may be flooding the carbs but we have adjusted and even exagerated them so they are not flooding, the chokes are clean as is the rest of the carbs. diaframs are soft and supple. has 118 main jet and i think a 44 idle.

we have tried the air screw in various possitions but still no joy. what is the correct setting?

any thoughts on what could be wrong?
