First check the starter relay make sure the wires are connected well. Then test it as instructed by the haynes manual. If all is good then take the starter off and check the brushes, if their worn it won´t work. OldBikeBarn.com has brushes for 21.95 /pair and is recommended to be replaced every 10,000 miles but check it first. bikeBandit.com has a starter relay for $31.52. Good Luck, I hope this helps!
