Kickstand kill switch?

My 1982 dies as soon as it is put in gear. The warning panel shows the kickstand is down, which it is not. Is the motorcycle´s dying when put in gear the expected result when the safety switch for the kickstand is malfunctioning? Runs great in neutral. Is this easily defeated?
