It´s now a year since my last post above, and I´m still thoroughly enjoying my XJ650 Maxim. At the very end of last year I bought a new set of tires as the ones which came with the bike had begun to harden, making hard cornering scary and hard braking undependable. Very valuable investment and the bike is behaving as it should. As the snow was just ending this spring, I rode it out to a nearby repair shop for a minor valve adjustment, which seemed to quiet it down a little bit, getting rid of that valve ringing sound and an annoying tick-tick sound. The last investment was a few weeks ago when I picked up an after-market throttle lock to act as a kind of cruise control. I still say, if you can find one of these in good condition, you´ll have a loyal steed and a dependable ride, with plenty of fun if you want to lean it over hard in the corners. Very, very well behaved. My only complaint is in first gear with the shaft drive - since there´s so much engine braking, you need to have a delicate throttle hand, but that´s easy to learn and primarily applies only to first gear. Enjoy what´s left of the summer, and keep the rubber side down! Hal |
