Having purchased a used Seca Turbo in the summer of 2001, I have done a complete restoration of the bike to near showroom condition. Overall, the bikes design is far from perfect. Cast more as a sport-touring machine, it does both, but neither very well. Seating is fine for short runs, but becomes abusive as the miles add up. For those use to the newer bikes, the Seca feels top heavy and under-sprung in the sweepers. As for maintenance, the powerplant and drivetrain is remarkably solid, however the custom made pressurized carbs are one of the biggest problems most owners will face. Lessons learned: 1.) The bike is doomed to eventually fall into obscurity, as its limited production prevented any aftermarket support. After 20+ Years, Yamaha is discontinuing most parts, including ones critical to its function. You will rely heavily on parts bikes for long-term ownership. 2.) The Seca Turbo is not a racer, and overall handling is hampered by its top-heavy 1983 technology. Today’s bikes generate equal power, on a lighter frame, so the days of the Seca spanking other 750’s is gone. In the bikes defense, the thrill of bringing it up on boost is about as good as it get. 3.) The style is an eye catcher, often confused with newer BMW’s. 4.) I love this bike. Truly a rare Japanese ride for those wanting to be just a little different than the crowd. |
