Hey Bro, I own a 1982 Yamaha 550 Maxim and had the same problem. It turned out to be that the starter brushes were on their last leg. The brushes make partial contact and allow the starter to work intermittantly(sp?)I would suggest replacing the brushes if you can find them for sale anywhere on the planet. I am currently tring to find them myself.
