Yes as you say the supplement for post 1984 models show a twin disc and also a rear disc, this though was only fitted to the xj600 which is a sport bike, you say yours bike is a xj550 and these were only ever fitted with a rear drum and single front disc, I would guess that someone has done an upgrade on your bike at sometime and hey if it works then you hace got the extra stopping power, by the way what rear brake do you have is it a drum or disc?
