Hello all. New to your forum. My friends Yamaha 1981 xj550 starter clutch has packed up and his primary chain is very noisy and as he is not too handy with spanners I am trying to sort it. Engine is out and on the bench, head and barrel off and crankcases split. First obvious problem is that the oil pressure line to the primary chain tensioner is fractured and come away from the relief valve post, I assume that this is the reason for the noisy primary chain and it will have to be replaced. The chain looks very substantial and seems OK but would you renew it (and the cam chain) as a matter of course now that the engine is split?? Another question is I am working from the Clymer manual and I do not like it one bit. Always hopping across chapters, very, very, very few illustrated drawings and what photo´s there are are of such poor quality. Anyone know where I can buy something more user friendly? (I like the Haynes manuals but it seems they don´t do one for the xj550) Also need a Parts manual but cannot find anything on the internet. Lastly I am told Wemoto is a good place for spares. Would you agree? All help most gratefully received. |
