I see you have figured out that there is some problem with number of RPMs the engine is turning for the amount of MPH you are going. I´m not sure what market Yamaha had in mind when designing the Virago 250, but I think it has a problem with the gear ratio. The Virago 250 has too much low-end torque and not top-end speed. From the factory, they come with a 16 tooth drive sprocket and a 45 tooth rear sprocket. This equates to a gear ratio of 2.813 to 1. When you are in first gear, it is almost impossible to accelerate without the bike lunghing. To correct this problem, I changed the rear sprocket from the 45 tooth sprocket to a 38 tooth sprocket. This gives you a gear ratio of 2.375 to 1. With the old sprocket, I would shift to fifth gear around 35 MPH. Now I shift at 55 MPH. With the old sprocket, I would be at full throttle at 70 MPH. Now I am at half throttle at 70 MPH. This change also made the bike much smoother to ride in first and second gears with very little loss of power. I use to spend all my time shifting gears, now I can loop along in fifth gear at 55 MPH and the bike finally gets the 80 MPG that the manufacturer stated the bike should get. Later, Sango12 |
