Just took delivery of my 2013 VStar 650 Custom last Wednesday (8/10 mi)....WAS APPROVED for the 950, main difference besides engine size, is 950 has 4 valves per cylinder which is smoother, better and higher cruising and speed. A 650 will do you fine, lighter weight means little better handling, control, maneuverability, etc...but you won´t have any trouble keeping up with the traffic with the 650.
