Hi Folks, I have a 1999 V-Star 650 classic. Love to ride and put 12K miles on the bike over the last 5 years. Have 3 800 mile trips and 2 1200 mile trips in the last 2 years. Did a 3000 mile full overhaul last year with new oil, filters, etc then took it to Vegas last year without trouble. Ran compression and replaced air a filter, spark plugs, and battery a month ago then took it to Vegas again without any issues. Compression was running about 120-130 on both cylinders? (It appeared to be within range from the forums? Both cylinders were the same compression on each test) Didn´t change out the oil this time around because I only had 1300 miles on it since my last change. Anyways, it ran like a champ taking me comfortably at 85-90 mph the entire ride. A few weeks ago, I was on my way to UT and lost power at 80 mph and dropped to 70 in less than a second then I got a horrible rattle (sounded like a loose ball-bearing at the front base of the front cylinder) for about 2-3 seconds then nothing - engine seized. Luckily I placed my hand on the clutch when the rattle started and engaged it when the engine seized so I didn´t throw myself with a locked rear tire at 70 mph. I have taken the upper head chain cover off and the chain is tight and the gear looks healthy - oil was present and the color is okay brown. Haven´t been able to figure out how to remove the head so I can take a look at the cylinder or the lower gear and oil pump area? The schematics I have are horrible and I don´t have a manual yet. Tips? Thoughts? Thanks.
