Gunner,
The bike will haul you, no problem. In fact, I think you´ll be impressed at how well it WILL haul you and the available torqe the little engine makes, above and beyond what´s required for the job.
I´m about your height and weight and recently bought a 2000 TW (USA) for $2100 USD with less than 600 miles on it. I fixed a few things on it (all cosmetic) so the bike looks and rides as new. My first and only modifications to the TW were powder-coating some of the "high wear" items and a new o-ring chain with a smaller 45-tooth rear sprocket so it doesn´t wind as high RPMs at 50-55, my general cruising speed.
Now to the first part of your question; the bike and price for the ´87.
An ´87 is an older bike. The smaller the bike is,or the more mileage it has on it, ther lower the life-expectancy will be.
$500 isn´t a bad price, depending on the maintenance/riding habits of the previous owner. If the maintenance history hasn´t been consistent or the majority of past mileage was off-road/hard, let it go by and save your coin for a newer bike...
I keep the maintenance up on mine, in fact over-maintained because I want it to LAST. After all, I didn´t get it to work on, I got it to RIDE. And the local Yamaha delership is wealthy enough without me being in there weekly for incidental replacement parts or God forbid, MAJOR mechanical repairs.
A good, solid used TW, with low miles, two to four years old will run generally between $2000-$3000 and e-bay has them all the time.
If you can stand to wait for the fall or winter season, you might save a substantial amount of money but remember; new ones are approx. $3600 and the ´05s are out now! Good luck; you won´t be disappointed in the TW!:-)
