Rear light failure

Having checked bulb,socket and all connections to the headlight my rear light still sometimes fails to come on. Though the brake light works fine.
After turning the switch for the lights, the back light sometimes comes on immediately, sometimes after a few minutes, and sometimes fails to illuminate altogether. Anyone had the same experience?
