Check the vent hose on the gas tank. Sounds like it is clogged and won´t allow gas to flow through the petcock to the carb. When it dies, it allows just enough air in to run briefly. This happens. Take the gas cap off and start it. If it runs and doesn´t cut out, you know where the problem is.
