I bought the filter from the local Yamaha dealer (less than $10). The oil from Kragen (autoparts store). I did alot of reading up on oil for bikes. The overall results lean to the conclusion that automobile oil will work just fine..There is no evidence to show that a very expensive quart of bike oil is better than auto. What with refined oil having better viscosity/additives today, I can see why. Sort of like putting high grade gas in your tank, when all petroleum today is so highly refined that there is no such thing as ´bad gas´ anymore. The oil I got was Castrol GTX 10-30. The filter is the Yamaha 5RU-13440-00 for the YP-400. I used an Irwin mini vise-grip (Item# 13SG)to take off the bolt. After that it was a breeze. I am looking to maintain my bike myself. I have 3400 miles on the clock. This weekend I will be doing my own scheduled maintainence (without the oil change). Will keep you informed how it went... |
