If you can just get a wiring harness from a DT 250 it´s so much easier but If you want to keep the 400 wiring harness you will have to modify the ground wires that are screwed onto the Ignition coil/frame. On the DT 400 the ground wires start where the ignition coil is screwed onto the frame underneath the fuel tank and go to a three prong connector which then goes to the CDI box. On the DT 250 the ground wires also comes from the ignition coil/frame but connect to the headlight ground wire somewhere. There may be an open connector for this on the DT400 either inside the headlamp housing or underneath the fuel tank under the frame where a lot of the wires connect. You will need an ohm meter for this to find the correct headlight ground wire. What you want to do is get some wire about the same guage and then do not cut the three prong connector (located on the right side of the motorcycle underneath the plastic cover) just get a bullet connector (You should try to use the ones the factory used you may have to order them online my friend did and I can get the name of the place)and plug your new wire with connector into the three prong connector that used to plug into the CDI box connector then find the headlamp ground wire and either splice into it or find the open connector. All you just did was extend the wire so it can reach the ground wire from the headlight. The power wire coming from the ignition coil also needs to be modified. That wire also goes into the three prong connector which then goes to the CDI box connector. Do the same thing with the ground wire except this wire is going to go to the stator. There is a four prong connector on both the DT 250 AND DT400 but on the 400 there is one open slot in that four prong connector on the DT 250 the slot is in use. All your are doing is going to extend the Igntion coil power wire and engine cut off wire. Plug your new bullet connectors with your new wires into the three prong connector and then plug the other ends into a quad female bullet type connector then run one wire out of the quad female bullet connector into the open slot on the four prong connector coming out of the stator(different connector look at the other connectors that´s the one you need). Now that wire setup I just told you about is going to be very short about 4 inches because the connectors are close to each other. I would try to get a DT250 wiring harness becasue everything just plugs in and it will probably be faster to install . I got one off of ebay for $15.00 I got lucky with the price . If you look for a while you should find one for a decent price. Some people rip you off so just wait until one comes on ebay for a decent price. If you need any more help just let me know I will give you a call. Thanks Darren |
