I had a 78 dt 175 was the same way. I burned up 2 pistons before I figured it out. Seemed like I would lean it out and it ran great. Then I found the real problem. Check your spark arrestor in your muffler, mine was plugged tight, the engine couldn´t breath. If thats what it is put your jetting back the way it was or you will melt a piston too.
