I am looking into buying this bike with the same problem. Most likely the pipes were replaced with non-factory pipes with less back pressure causing a lean mixture thus the backfire. Jet kit should fix the problem. Needs more fuel. I was told this from a 50 year plus bike rider and a retired mechanic teaching instructor. I plan to still purchase the bike. A new jet kit is $50. Good luck.
