Hi Tim, What´s Up!! How are you? Man, let me tell ya, I have heard all kinds of bull(and facts) about my beloved TL1000R. I don´t have a clue as to why,how or where they get it it from. Honestly Tim, I´ve ridden mine a full two years now and mine is a ´98 model bought secondhand and had only 4K-klm on it.(note that I live in Japan) It has been quite reliable for me and I ride it everyday to my gigs, rain or shine. She preforms just fine. It is also full-tuned. The bike can hang with the best of´em even in the city.(Tokyo) I can tour,go cruisin´ and get this..DRAG RACE IT TOO and still the bad boy can deal with the work load I throw at it.(I carry heavy bags sometimes, gig bags with ease.) Mind you, the bike does have some flaws(there isn´t such a thing as a perfect bike to purchase as you must know with your experience)You either love´em or just like´em and just tolerate the habits.OK Tim,to stop rantin´ on about how I love mine, and get to your concerns; 1)The TL1000R DOES GET HOT,QUITE HOT SOMETIMES 2)THE SETTINGS FOR YOUR RIDING STYLE ARE CRUCIAL,BUT ONCE YOU ARE THERE,LOOK OUT YOU ARE RIDIN´ YOUR OWN PET TIGER! 3)THE ELECTRONICS ARE ALL RELIABLE IF YOU TAKE THE PROPER CARE TIME TO TIME.(like changin´ plugs, checkin´ & cleanin´ the MAIN battery connectors) 4) THE TL1000R IS A WOMAN MAGNET!TRUST ME!! EVEN FOREIEGN GIRLS HERE GANDER MORE THAN THREE OR FOUR MINUTES AT INTERSECTIONS OR WHEN I ROLL UP AT STARBUCKS! 5) IT WILL DEVOUR´A REAR TIRE IF YOU GO TOO CHEAP!(I´m runnin´ Michelin´s Pilot Power series, front /rear..got´em in April and they´re still grippin´ with tread to spare!)Others have not lasted as expected. 6)USE A GREAT SYNTHETIC OIL,ROYAL PURPLE,LUCAS,QUAKER STATE,AND REDLINE ARE HITS..YOU´LL FEEL THE RESPONSE,TRUST ME! 7)MUST HAVE AFTERMARKET PARTS,..POWER COMMANDER II,K&N FILTER,TRE-RESISTER,AND A GREAT SOUNDING PAIR OF SLIP-ON´s..(TIM,that sound will win you over..buddy,NO DOUBT!!)also some GOOD BRAKE PADS,TRUST ME,YOU´LL NEED´EM OR WISH YOU HAD THEM ON TWISTIN´ THRU THOSE OL´ MEAN STREETS. 8) A KICK-ASS SET OF TIRES TO YOUR LIKING,TRY WHAT YOU KNOW WORKS FIRST TIM,THE LEARNING CURVE IS STEEP ENOUGH AS IS..for example,Dunlaps don´t agree with me,and I just seem to burn thru Brigestones,Metzler(??) are TOO EXPENSIVE for me to use,..Pirelli are my 2nd choice to which Michelin win it hands down for my needs. 9)YES!!THE TL1000R OR 1000S ARE TORQUE=WHEELIE MONSTER SHOW-OFF´s!! THEY WILL COME UP ON YOU WHEN YOU WISH OR DO NOT WISH TO,IF YOU AREN´T CAREFUL WITH YOUR HAND-CLUTCHIN´!! THIS ALSO EQUATES TO THOSE FULL-BANKED RIGHT OR LEFT-HANDERS YOU MAY ENCOUNTER.(although I mostly get "little" wiggles in right-handers when I try too much throttle in those corners or if a bump/debris sends me off my "line" in the turns. These can get intimidating if you let´em and stay not set up properly.)Well, there you have the jist of it..So,I´ll close with this. If you enjoyed the Buell and understand V-Twins a bit then this is an X-perience you won´t want to pass up.The TL-R is a different animal. If you can arrange a test ride,do so BEFORE you get serious enough to buy one ´cause I think the TL1000R crotch-rocket AIN´T FO´ ER´BODY!!But if you truly love sports bikes, you best at least ride this bad boy one time. But I´d recommend you get a ´98 /´99/´02 or ´03 TL1000R in the color of your choice if you do. And those other colors should get a look-see.. Like YELLOW OR RED like mine. I´ve owned/ridden a 500cc Gamma,(now racing this one only)and GSX-R..But I´m sold on the TL1000R for a long while I think or at least until that Suzuki GSV-R is on sale to the market.Imagine Tim, a V-4 over 750cc,basically a double V-Twin motor!..AAARGH!!..I´m salivatin´ at the mouth like "Homer Simpson" Hope you find a good one Tim, ....I´ll Holla!! |
