Regulator failure questions

I have a 95 RF900 with 65K on the odometer, and the regulator has gone out (I´m getting 15.3 volts at idle back at the battery). OEM replacements seem to start at about $180, and aftermarket ones at roughly $80. Also this part is kind of a pain to access (in the alternator). Would there be any issues with installing a simple external regulator used on many bikes in line between the alternator and the battery? If there are issues with this approach, has anybody used the aftermarket regulators and know whether there are any issues with these? Thanks!
