I have 1990 savage and have recently put a new exhaust on mine and the back fires are from closing the throttle or downshifting as you say but mine only happens when the revs are quite high. dont worry ask my local mot station when it recently had an mot he said it doesnt do any damage to the bike

and presides i think it sounds awsome and makes people jump. i love my bike its great
