Valve clearance measurement and adjustment must be performed with the engine cool, at room temerature. the correct valve clearance is: 0.08-0.13mm (0.003-0.005in.) the exhaust valve is located in the front of the engine, and the intake is in the back of the cylinder. 1)remove the seat 2)remove the gas tank 3)remove the bolt and cap nut securing the cylinder head left-hand cover. remove the cover and rubber cushions. 4)carefully disconnect the spark plug lead from the spark plug. 5)remove the spark plug from the cylinder head. 6)remove the valve timing inspection cover on the left-hand crankcase cover. 7)use a 17mm wrench on the alternator rotor bolt. Rotate the engine clockwise, as viewed from the left-hand side, until the engine is at top dead center (TDC) on the compression stroke. Align the groove on the end of the alternator rotor with the notch in the alternator cover. 8)with the groove aligned with the notch, jiggle both rocker arms and make sure BOTH have free play. If one rocker arm is still under tension, rotate the engine an additional 180 degrees until both rocker arms have free play. 9)again, check that the groove on the end of the alternator rotor is aligned with the notch in the cover. 10)With the engine in this position, check the clearance of the intake and exhaust valves by inserting a flat feeler gauge between the adjusting screw and each valve stem. When the clearance is correct, there will be a slight drag on the feeler gauge when it is inserted and withdrawn. 11)if the clearance is incorrect, you will need a 10mm wrench and a flat blade stubby screwdriver to loosen the nut, and turn the adjustment screw in or out depending on whether you need to tighten or loosen the valve... If you email me, I can email you back the pages in my manual pertaining to the valve adjustment, or anything else you may need. I have a PDF copy of the Suzuki Savage manual... I hope this helps!!!! |
