Check milage and ask if normal maintenance has been done regularly on it; like oil changes every 3000 mi., air filter replacement if necessary (have the owner open the side cover so you can look at it) -has the cam chain tensioner been checked, especially if there is more than 10,000 miles on the engine ? -tire condition (if the tire is more than 5-6 yrs old it does not matter how much tread it has, it needs to be replaced soon) -does EVERYTHING work ? -does it start easily without any hassles ? -do the wheels spin freely when turned or at least rolled around ? -do both brakes work easily and well ? -is the oil clean ? when was it last changed ? (On the right side of the engine at the bottom of the case is a little round window and when the bike is held up straight the oil level should be at the center of the glass or a bit above) -does the clutch work freely and properly ? -are any parts missing from the bike ? -Is it rideable ? Take a test ride if possible. (be sure to let the engine warm up really well, like 5 minutes at idle; this way you can find out if it will idle smoothly and respond to throttle blips cleanly. That should get you started. |
