Hope someone can help.....

I had my heart set on getting a new (2007) Suzuki M800.
BUT....
I´ve just had a test drive on a 2005 one with 8,000 miles on the clock. I thought it was a dream come true until I tried to stop!!! The rear brake seems to be non existant.
Can anyone shed any light as to wether this may have been due to the particular bike I was on, or is it a bit of a feature of the M800 that being able to stop in a hurry is not an option?
