Reserve Fuel Tank Operation

I have a 2012 V-Star 1300 Tourer I purchased last year (new) and only have slightly over a thousand miles on it as of now (I moved last summer and didn´t get much of a chance to ride). My question? How does the reserve fuel tank work? Not sure if there is a manual switch-over...or if it is automatic. Would appreciate any information on how it operates. Thanks.
