I am not the greatest mechanic, but, unless you have bled your brakes they will not work at all or have very low performance. Air in your brake lines is a compressable fluid while the brake fluid/oil is a incompressable fluid so instead of compressing your brake pads onto your rotors you are compressing the air in the lines. Hope that works,
