I have an 81 gs 450 t I bought in 94 and rode constantly until 1999. I, too have all original parts. The things which are most tricky are: 1- It idles fine at 3k (though clutching´s a bear), but rough at low rpm when it is hot. I have long ago established that she needs a carb rebuild. This is really evident in the need to run with the primer opened longer, and the decreased fuel economy. The idle adjuster is relatively easy to access to hide the needed work, though to adjust it hot (which is where it needs help) you must glove up or burn up your paw. 2- the coil wires are very worn and cracked due to time and miles, and you must replace the coils to replace the wires. The coil wires were really a big contributor to the rough hot running until I siliconed and taped them at the cracks to buy time. 3- I have been told the alternator/generator is bad, but after several years (12), I´ve only been through maybe 4 batteries. Perhaps this is why this machine has a headlight switch. I found running with lights off for a few minutes before shut down and after startup helped. 4- Now the front brake system is in need of replacement due to age, as the reservoir and lines are all suncracked. To answer your main question: after setting up for a year at a time more than once I´ve found that trickle charging the battery, changing the oil, changing the gas, lubing the chain and checking tension, checking the brake fluid and tires (for air pressure as well as dry rot)usually gets my suzi back up and going inside a day. Otherwise, I just check and repair problems as they arise, which is not frequently. As I said, I am finally needing to do the brake and carb repairs desperately, but the last time I decided on a whim to drive her to work, we did make it there and back. I do not plan to unload this machine any time soon. Good luck. |
