Seems to be a charging issue on my GS400

The battery isn´t charging while the bikes running, I have to hook it up to my charger when I get home and its new. Lights all work fine while riding. I´m not that familiar with electrical, so would it be the stator or alternator....or are they the same thing??? Anybody know anything about the charging system.
