carb pukes gas after re-assembly

So I got me a chopper with a 79 GS1000 mounted in it. This poor bike spent two winters outside, including Canadian winters. I picked it up as a lark and a learning tool. It has been that. When I emptied the float bowls originally it was not pretty. Got it to run but not idle, so I took the carbs apart and gave them a thorough cleaning. Got em all back together and now it pukes gas out of a hole off each carb which points towards the air-box. Have tried setting the floats deeper, have even tried introducing gas with the bowls off and held the floats up with my fingers and this stops the flow so I suspect it is not the needles. Does anyone have any ideas out there before I lose my Zen?
