From memory it takes about 1300 ml. If you needed to put in 400 ml you were close to damaging the head. You may have damaged it anyway. They seem to burn oil so check it often. Put the bike on its side stand. Kneel down by oil window and hold the bike upright by its right handle bar. Thats the best way to determine level.
