I have had an 01 DR-Z 250 for a few months now. It is comparably quite, and it is pretty hard to pop a wheely. As far as keeping up with the pack, my buddies have KTM 450 and a KTM 525 and i have to ride pretty hard but, I do keep up with them on the trails, but they are out of site on the straight aways.
