I´ve found that the backfiring when turning off the engine is eliminated if you pull the choke out all the way for a few seconds just before turning it off.

Not sure about your other questions as I don´t have backfiring issues during deceleration, just when I´m cutting off the engine, so I do not ride with the choke out like others have suggested.
