I bought one a few months ago; also from 91.
I hope the noise is normal because mine has the same problem. Between 1500rpm and 5000rpm there is a rattling noice. Once above the noice is a lot less. For the moment I´m checking valve clearence and adjusting the carb´s. But everything looks normal. The bike runs just like yours very smooth to the red line and I dit 2000km with the ratling noice but doesn´t seam to have an effect on the performence off the bike. Also discust this problem wiht a friend who recondisions engines and he thinks I won´t harm the bike.
If you find a solution for it Let me know and I will do the same
