I bought my new ZRex, back in November of 2005 and had a 2003 Suzuki Intruder 1400 with full coverage insurance through Farmers with a very good rate. It was $385.00/year, for full coverage with average coverages . I checked with Farmers for the new Kawasaki, after I bought it, and they wanted about $1000 a year for the same coverage. I was furious! I am 54 years old with a very good driving record and have a MSF certification with a M1 license, so I didn´t think that rate was fair. Farmers claimed it was because the ZRX1200 was classified as a Sport Bike so it was more expensive to insure. I then called around and checked with Pregressive, they quoted me $1900 for a 6 month policy, then Geico, which I had 3 cars insured with, quoted me about $850.00 a year, and then I tried "AAA" because my friend said he got a good rate from them for his Yamaha FZ1. "AAA" quoted me $4500 a year. COME ON!! What is going on here!! I finally went back to the Kawasaki Dealer, I bought the bike from, and told him I wish I hadn´t bought the bike, knowing what the increase in insurance was. The Dealer was able to get me good coverage insurance for about $450.00 a year from Pacific Specialty Insurance Company. That was great! So the bottom line is check insurance rates before you buy a bike, especially a Sport Bike, and see if the Dealer can give you a good quote when you deal on the price of the bike. I am very pleased with the Dealer helping me out and just remember that the Insurance Company´s out there claiming they give the best prices on Motorcycles, (Progressive, Gieco, etc.), are not giving deals at all. Take the time to shop around. I have since cancelled the Geico insurance on my 3 cars and found a better price with another company for about 1/2 the cost that I was paying with Geico, with better coverage, so it pays to SHOP insurance rates.
