My son bought a 83 440 and soon had starter troubles. We found however, the problem was the starter button. When taken apart we found the small circuitboard connected to the button had cracked and was not allowing the electrical contact to be made. We cut a peice of plastic tube to place behind the circuitboard so the button would not just force all the parts inside the case. At first I made the tube too long and the started would stick sometimes. I shortend the tube and it works perfectly. (It was a quick fix that has lasted several months so far. The tube was actually cut from the cap of a bic ink pen.)
