Hard to start

I should first start off by saying that every once in a while, my bike (1980 kawasaki 440 ltd) will leak gas (alot) out of the carb pipes (where you bleed the carb.) If I bleed the carb till it is completely drained, and then tightly close the vavle, it will stop leaking gas again for a while. On top of this, if I let my bike sit for over 4 hours, I then have a really hard time starting it. Sometimes it even drains the battery, but eventually will get going. I should also mention that I did get the carbs cleaned, but it did not seem to make a difference. Also once I do get the bike going, it seems to backfire while I am driving it for about the first five minutes, after that it runs great. Does anyone have any ideas as to what I can do to fix my bike, I am getting very tired of bomb starting it all the time. Thanks
