I bought a brand new one in 1981, for around $1200 I think, and I liked it so much that tomorrow I´m going to drive nearly 100 miles to buy another one. They´re pretty rare, and it took a while for me to find one I could ride home rather than ship. I like them because they represent a class of bikes that has almost completely disappeared -- the standard, lightweight, no-nonsense Japanese 300-450cc air-cooled twins that were reliable and had plenty of torque and power to move a good-sized person around town (I´m 6´3" and weight 250 lbs). To me, these were the best motorcycles ever designed for the purpose of moving a full-grown man around inside city limits, on surface streets. They have the perfect balance of power, weight, size, simplicity, and cheapness (low purchase price and low operating costs). And the 440 LTD´s don´t look bad, either. The engine reminds me of a Triumph vertical twin and the bike looks aggressive without being another Sportster clone. I never had any trouble with my first one, except that the belt made a slight whining/humming sound that was audible at low speeds, despite being aligned and tensioned propertly. This was true from the day I bought it. Other than that it was perfect. |
