Transmission type/Final Drive "Belt vs Chain"

I had a choice of buying two "clean" low milage 81 KZ 440 LTD´S.One was chain driven the other by a belt.Some of my friends who love these clasic bikes suggest "I should be belted in the head" for purchasing the 440 LTD-D model.Are they correct? Does anyone have a suggestion where I could download a manual or purchase one?
