Kawasaki W650: Classic elegance, modern sophistication

Having passed retirement age, it´s fitting that I should have just bought a fully modern motorcycle that looks as though it was built 40 years ago. The Kawasaki is not only a stunning imitation of the classic Triumph Bonneville, it is a superb, modern machine, with the sophistication one expects from today´s bikes: electronic speedometer/odometer with clock, electronic tachometer, front disk brake, overhead-cam engine, electronic ignition, and electric starter, plus a kick starter to boot, for old-times sake! Like the distinguished cars of the 1930´s, the W650 has a classic gracefulness that endured in motorcycles for nearly 50 years because it was both beautiful and exquisitely functional.

The handling on this bike is superb! It is one of the best machines I have ever driven, very nearly equal to the BMW R60/5 I owned 25 years ago. It rolls into the turns without becoming top heavy, and rolls back out nimbly and with no hesitation with a touch of power. Because of its relatively modest weight [about 460 pounds (209 kG), wet], it´s easy to handle in town, yet it´s heavy and stable enough, and fast enough, to be an extremely pleasant tourer.

This motorcycle is truly a machine that lets you know immediately that it is at your command, and completely under your control. Thus far, it has never displayed any bad manners.

Try one. You should be very pleasantly surprised and delighted.
