Oil Fill cap

Okay here is my problem. I have a 98 Kawasaki Vulcan and need to add oil to it. On my model the oil fill cap is on the side of the bike flush with the oil tank. I cant get it to open. I am a new rider and maybe I am looking in the wrong place but my manual says I am not. Anyways, I cant open the oil cap at all. Is anyone else having this problem or does anyone know how to fix this problem.
