Strange Engine Noise

I own a 2006 VN900D (not in California) with 16,000 miles on it. An intermittent noise has started which seems to emanate from the lower left side of the engine. It has become more prominent over the last 500 miles. The noise is a sustained whine which exists at idle and at higher rpms. The bike can be sitting still or moving with clutch engaged or not. It is not coming from the transmission, since the noise can be present at idle in neutral while sitting still. It almost sounds like a whistle from the air intake, but it is on the wrong side of the engine. I am worried that a cam or crankshaft bearing is beginning to fail. Has anyone experienced this noise with your Vulcan?
Please clue me in if you have.
Thanks,
Randy in St. Louis
