In July of 1971, I had just finished a surgical internship in New York City. I was dog-tired and pasty-faced, and I did not look like a biker. I went into Hap Jones Motorcycles in San Francisco and said that i wanted to buy a H1.I assured them that I had been driving motorcycles for 7 years and could handle it. Nevertheless,to their credit, they spent over an hour trying to talk me into a more reasonable machine. They failed. I bought it, and rode it and loved it for about 5 years. And I raced it , in a very amateurish way, at New England Dragways in New Hampshire. two of us had H1´s, and they made us race against the 750s, to try to make a fair race of it. They failed. Every Sunday, I came in second and the other guy came in first. He was 17 and really brave/crazy. He would rev it to 7 or 8,ooo and pop the clutch. The wheel lifted skyward..and he won. I could never force myself to do the same, so i never one---but I never died , either. So, not too bad. And my wife, who feared the bike (in a way that she has not for the other bikes that we have had for the last 40 years) DID like the howl. She could hear it about half a kilometer away and know that i was soon to arrive home. I, too, miss mine, but I would never get on it again--I am too old..and too wise. |
