| Me and a buddy bought 2 of these bikes brand new in 1984- they were holdovers that the dealer never sold. We hooked up with a another buddy of his who also had an 82 model. We strapped on sleeping bags, tents, supplies and rode from Carlsbad,Ca down to Baja California (Encinanda) Then we crossed through Baja and arrived at a place called Mike´s Sky Ranch long after dark. We almost got lost in those hills in the middle of Baja. We camped out and then took off for San Filipe- 3 new XL500´s rolling down the highway. We really turned some heads down there. It was Easter weekend and San Filipe was a madhouse. We left there and exited Mexico and Mexicalli and Callexico, driving through Plaster City around 10:00pm by El Centro. It was a fun 3 days of riding. Our bikes never broke. That was 20 years ago and I miss that bike. The XL500 is virtually bullet proof. It even ran on that cheap gas down there which caused mine to make some funny pinging sounds from the cylinder every now and then, but it never missed a beat. It´s true, you can rally lean these things over to one side, with plenty of torque in seemingly any gear you happen to be in. The only down side is it´s a little bit of a lead sled for pure offroad work- but managable in capable hands. Wish I would have kept mine! |
