You have probably already taken your long trip but I drove across Australia on a 1972/73 XL250 in 1982 (from Cairns to Perth around the top end). Took extra fuel, a can of ´Puncture Repair in a Can´, an M1 rifle strapped to the side in a scabbard, a tent and some food. 6-9 hrs/day was enough for me.
