Cam chain adjustment

I recently purchased a 1982 XL185s. I read in the Haynes manual the procedure to adjust the cam chain - essentially loosen the large adjuster nut while the bike is running, then re-tighten. After doing this, the chain sounds like it is rattling. Is this normal? Is there any other adjustment I should make?
