Power Commander

I recently bought a VTX 1800 C with vance and hines pipes on it, the place that I bought it from told me that I would not need a power commander with it but at the same time it seems that I am getting quite abit of backfire. They also told me that the power commanders were hard to program and that it could burn up the motor.
Any responce would be great.
