how do i fix my idle problem

my 1990 honda vtr 250 doesnt like to warm up its starts and idles with the choke all the way on but when the temp gauge goes to the middle i start moving the choke up and it keeps acting like its going to die until it actually does its like i cant ride it with choke off or it will die what do i do how do i fix this problem
