After how many miles oil change is recommended?

With an old V-4 like the Saber, after how many miles an oil change is needed. I keep seeing between 2000 mil-4000 mil, does the difference depend on the oil being used such as synthetic vs regular? Also, what are some recommended strategies to keep the bike running in its optimal condition?
