That sure sounds like an ignition problem. It backfires because of fuel vapour making it past the exhaust valve.
Do your lights go off when this happens? Did something else happen that could have something to do with this, like a crash? Have you had it apart? have you added new lights?
It´s a tough call, I would start looking for a loose Batt. cable or ignition wire or maybe the ignition sw itself
